9 dB of dynamics is outrageous! I remember when in the 90s I was disappointed when I found out the Dire Straits Brothers in Arms DDD CD had “only” about 30 dB of dynamic range compared to the 90 dB range available in the CD format! Man, times have changed….

I have upfiring Atmos speakers. I have to turn up the level of them to +10db more than the rest of the system to notice any difference than regular 5.1 Anyone else do this?

Meanwhile live amplified music is generally done in 2.0 except for some very small setups - and in many movies mixed for discrete PCM 5.1 or 7.1, the music plays only in the left and right channels.

I think the problem with the Moondrop phone is the Android forward compatibility and that most cellular providers won't allowed it to connect to their network in the US, with the exception of T-Mobile, maybe.

Hi John, I love quality music. It’s big part of my everyday life, 8AM - 10PM music is playing… However I don’t name myself audiophile. I do experiment with many of choices, I’m buying on “AudiogoN”, testing and in most cases sale it back. In my experience 44.1k/16 or higher recordings are good enough, record mastering matter most and not the bit rate. I watched many of your reviews and I appreciate them a lot. In last 10+ years I tested almost any of available streaming services. In my experience “Amazon Music Unlimited” it’s clear winner. It’s not about the price. I’m not using any of the modern streamers like WiiM and similar devices because privacy concerns. I use a laptop with good quality DAC/ADC connected to my pre amp tape loop.

I returned the A8 and I prefer the A6 master edetion in combination with the power supply upgrade from Beattechnick LPS-A6. It sounds more analog and works better for me. It would be better to compare the A8 in this review with the A6 master edition, there is a big difference between the normal A6 and the master edition.

The best argument to own the original is that bloody record companies remasters are rubbish. For example, Beatles are unlistanable in any platform, other groups that have been ruined by remasters, Iron Maiden, etc...and they will continue to destroy it for "modern audiences" ears.

Love this video and all these reasons and I will add this - if you buy stuff from other countries the shipping costs on a CD are significantly less. There are also many smaller bands and labels who can't afford to release on vinyl but a CD release is possible as I'm sure half of my Bandcamp purchases are CD only. Many new and smaller indie bands are also not on streaming so a CD is the way to go. I also run a small hobby label with at least half of our releases only available on CD. Thanks again!

As much as I love Roon and Roon ARC I'm finding it unstable and inefficient when I'm on the go. Sometimes it works great and other times it can't connect. Lately the app is crashing on my iphone 14 Pro Max and after starting the app 3 or 4 times it stays open and works.

The also make 2MR specific for Rega so no need to adjust VTA

I have got a dilemma 😅 I am using pioneer pd-91 CD player that in its day was a decent machine. And I’m wondering whether using an external DAC in say EURO 500 range would make an improvement. How do the 80s in built reasonably high quality DACs compare with the modern DACs?

Room treatment is more important than most people consider. I have three guitars in my room. One solid, the other semi hollow body and the other, full hollow body. The hollow bodies come off the wall for listening. Good dampening is crucial. In Canada I am always visiting folks with ten foot ceilings in their home. It’s awful just talk to them in a lively chat. Most homes out here utilize something called a “great room”. Kitchen and living room in one giant space with these 10 foot ceilings. Acoustically? Nightmare of reverberations. Then the stereo comes on…. Ugh! I’m glad for you on owning the H 390. Admittedly? Lots of amp for the speakers compared. But hey good to own one. Thanks for bringing up the topic of treatments in a room.

At home I mainly listen to my cd's that I've ripped to my PC and I use youtube music on the go because it's included with my youtube premium sub. It's hard to justify another streaming service anymore, especially when the most consistent hi-res I've listened to was Qobuz and they just don't have the same catalog support. I'm trying to really own all of my music as much as possible so I keep buying cd's as often as possible

Dynamic range has always been the reason I prefer Vinyl on the whole. Some CD reissues butcher the sound, not because CD is incapable of superb sound, but because the studio butchered it. One of the reasons I prefer Vinyl which I think is inherent in the format and the dynamic range (yes I'm aware the format has less SNR than CD is capable of) is that it's less fatiguing. When I was younger I liked to listen to my hifi *really* loud. With CDs that would cause my ears to ring and my head to ache after a while. With Vinyl I found I could listen at high levels for long periods without any fatigue. Excuse the analogy but highly compressed CD is like living in an ultra modern house with sharp shiny surfaces and Vinyl is more like living is 1970s house full of plants while wearing comfy corduroy slacks!

Dynamic range keeps going down because dumb record executives, and the artists themselves, will not go against the grain of LOUDER UNTIL IT BLEEDS. This is the real cause. The original Stop Making sense, recorded digitally and released at the onset was probably the best sounding of the bunch, but when CDs became mainstream, the loudness wars also began. And it has gotten worse. Vinyl isn't better, and neither is tape. What is better about those formats is that they cannot be pushed. That's it. That's the whole thing. IF an artist releases material with a full dynamic range and leaves it alone, the digital file and CD it will blow all other formats out of the water. Especially a 24bit, 48k file, with over 100db of dynamic range. Leave them things alone and we get back to music, not loudness.

Of course Atmos sounds great on a super expensive system, but how will it all trickle down to the average person at an affordable price that still sounds great? I'm not convinced that it ever will be anything more than a rich person's toy, even if Atmos is great. BTW, a really great interview.

Buying a CD back in time felt like starting a special relationship with the band. Like I have a part of them. Being owner of a Neil Young CD is different than "yeah, I got it in my playlist, probably" 😂

I found a brand new set of these exact LE almost two months here in Japan for a great price. The last thing I needed was another set of speakers. I too have the Kef LS50 Meta, Wharfedale EVO 4.2 and an older set of Usher Audio V602. These MA’s are really fantastic and they only get better after several hours. Also, changing out those jumpers on the back made a welcomed difference. Anyhow, thanks for the great review and channel. Cheers

Interesting stuff. My two rooms do not seem to have a reverb issue. I am certainly not saying professional treatments would not dial the rooms in more, but for the most part, I am happy with them. Maybe I am just lucky. Thanks again.

On the topic of genres that Atmos is/isn't suited for: I've yet to hear a metal mix in Atmos that truly sounded right to me. Every time I try, I switch back to stereo, and it feels like a decisive step up. Metal in particular... no matter how progressive or production heavy it is, is anchored and derives so much of its intensity from the cohesive unit of hard panned rhythm guitars + bass + drums. Pulling that apart or has, in my experience thus far, just ruined it. Clearly SW knows this instinctively, as his work with Opeth was absolutely excellent. So, I'd definitely be interested to hear him take a stab at an Atmos mix of one of those albums. Or, maybe he'd argue it just wouldn't be well-suited to Atmos?

What a great find (this video). I have an eversolo dmpa6 unfortunately bought just before the a8 was announced. I am debating getting the a8 but with this youtube video its time to pull out my modwright modified transporter and connect it to roon so tidal and spotify will work on it.

I want to scream all these points to the rooftops!!! CDs forever. It's so sad because I love a lot of current music and they either only release LPs and no CDs or they don't release physical copies at all. Some of my true 10/10 albums are new releases and I'm dying for a CD of them.
